Great British wool always.

At Monkstone, our mission is to foster a local circular economy that champions the rich heritage of Welsh wool and our community. By collaborating closely with local farmers, we ensure that the fibres and fabrics we use are not only sustainable but also traceable. Our commitment extends beyond the creation of quality knitwear and homeware; we aim to reinvigorate the regional wool industry by implementing farming schemes that prioritise environmental stewardship and community resilience.

In doing so, contribute to a future where craftsmanship and sustainability go hand in hand.

Through small-batch production and an emphasis on quality, we strive to make knitwear that lasts, honouring the age-old traditions of Welsh craftsmanship while paving the way for innovative and responsible practices. This holistic approach allows us to engage with the local economy and create a lasting impact on the farming community.

We began with one flock, it was the start.

A note from Anna -

Making pure wool products from our Monkstone fibre. We designed a few products each shearing season based on the amount of fleece we would get from our flock, creating woven homewares and made-to-order knitted garments, to become a classic heirloom pieces passed down through generations.

Three breeds make up our flock; native Welsh Black Mountains, Pure Dorsets and Coloured Dorsets. The neutral hues of their wool allow for grey, ecru and chocolate tones. We take huge pride in our sheep, as they graze their native pastures. Their fleeces are carefully sheared each year, washed, spun and coned, ending up in the talented hands of experienced craftspeople, hand knitters and weavers, all in our local area. Our wool is fully traceable, all the way back to the land. Once the knit eventually comes to the end of its life, it can be composted to provide nutrients back into the soil, fully biodegradable and sustainable.

Our commitment.

As we grow, we have introduced more fibre from trusted sources across the country. When we feel our wool isn’t the best match for a product, we always use British yarn. Every piece is tried and tested in Welsh weather around our farm to ensure long-lasting hardiness and practicality.

Through small-batch production and an emphasis on quality, we strive to make and curate goods that last, honouring age-old traditions of craftsmanship while paving the way for innovative and responsible practices.

Farming, gardening and floristry increasingly influences our design process at Monkstone. Like the seasons, Monkstone goods are ever changing, and we want our customers to feel part of the story.
